MCP and why it's the boring layer agents need

The Model Context Protocol is not an agent. It's the plumbing so that agents can be boring and predictable: a standard way for models to reach tools and data without hard-coding each integration.

What MCP actually standardises

At its core MCP gives you three things:

  1. Tools — a typed inventory of what an agent can call.
  2. Resources — data the model can read (files, context, databases).
  3. Prompts — repeatable starting points for tasks.

The win is the interface, not the implementation. Any agent can talk to any tool host in the same way. That's why it's "boring": the value is in standardisation, not cleverness.

Where I put the agent boundary

agent loop ──MCP──▶ tool host ──▶ files / shell / tests / apis

With AutoDevs I exposed 12 well-scoped tools through MCP. The discipline that mattered was keeping the tool surface small and opinionated. A narrow interface is easier to make safe, and safety is the whole ballgame for a tool that edits code.

Anthropic hooks worth remembering

  • Few, opinionated tools beat many vague ones. Every tool is an attack surface and a source of ambiguity.
  • Typed contracts reduce drift. When the boundary is typed, client and server can't silently disagree.
  • Verification belongs on the tool side. Let the harness own testing so the agent doesn't have to guess what "done" means.

Open questions I'm tracking

  • How to make MCP servers discoverable and versioned at scale.
  • How human-in-the-loop approval composes with asynchronous MCP calls.
  • Where an agent's memory should live so it isn't re-scanned every session.

I'm actively reading through the ecosystem as it settles and keeping comparisons as I build on the protocol — I'll update this note as the sharp edges become clear.
